The Dice Man: Web 2.0
The Dice Man, by Luke Rhinehart, is the sort of book that you read and it completely changes your perception on how you can live your life. When people get entangled in decision-making, it is refreshing to know that, if you wanted to, life could be random.
Rhinehart’s central character, the cunningly named Luke Rhinehart, is a product of his era. The Dice Man is set in the hedonistic, swinging sixties where you can easily imagine a life devoted to the random, whether that be uninhibited drug-taking, n-s-a sex or even murder. After all, it’s the die’s decision, not yours.
Fast-forward to 2009 and dice seems a bit, well, old-hat. Twitter and Facebook encourage us to document the minutiae of our lives (less Douglas Coupland and more self-indulgent sadly) so why can’t we apply Rhinehart’s logic if not his method to our modern lives? It might not as instantaneous as rolling a pair of die, but polls could be the answer.
I’m in the process of developing this idea and my first step can be seen documented on the blog Indie Undies with my patented-pick-my-pants-polls. Bit like Ronseal, it does what it says on the tin: I post images of me in a shop changing room in various underwear and you, dear, reader vote which pair you like best. It’s like my life is in your hands…
Check my first post here. Oh and make sure you take a moment to vote!
