low rent sexuality
I have always maintained that there has never been anyone cooler than Prince circa 1984 (that includes Prince now, mind). There’s just something about the raw sexuality in his music that you just can’t beat. Not one of us will ever be cooler than Prince. That, kids, is a FACT. You only have to watch the video for Kiss to really understand this. I mean look at him, look at his outfit! Seriously…
So, with that in mind, let us face up to the raw truth: we will never be as cool or as sexy as Prince. Once we’ve accepted that and moved on from it, we can fully appreciate this song from Sexual Harassment. It’s easy to dismiss it as a cheaper version of Prince and yeh maybe it is but hey, sometimes, there’s nowt wrong with the knock’off version of something!
As far as I can make out, SH were a one-man-band under the name Lynn Toliver, a.k.a. David Payton, and only ever released one record containing the song you’re about to fall in love with, “If I Gave You A Party”, and “I Need A Freak” (which in turn is covered by various low-rent rappers). “If I Gave You A Party” isn’t the best song, but it’s got this sleazy, don’t-give-a-fuck level of coolness to it. You would definitely go to this party.
